Low vision devices use the principles of magnification to make an object large enough to allow a visually impaired individual to see them. Low vision devices are designed for near tasks (reading , writing, etc.) and distance (TV, driving, signs, etc).

Near Low Vision Devices

  • Spectacle-mounted magnifiers – A magnifying lens is mounted in spectacles (this type of system is called a microscope) or on a special headband. This allows use of both hands to complete the close-up task, such as reading.

  • Hand-held and stand magnifiers – These can serve as supplements to other specialized systems. They are convenient for short-term reading of things such as price tags, labels, and instrument dials. Both types can be equipped with lights.

  • Video magnification – Table-top (closed-circuit television) or head-mounted systems enlarge reading material on a video display. Some systems can be used for distance views tasks. These are portable systems, and those that can be used with a computer or monitor. Image brightness, image size, contrast, and foreground/background color and illumination can be customized.

Distance Low Vision Devices

  • Hand Held Telescopes – These hand held telescopes are used for distance spotting of things like blackboards and street signs.

  • Telescopic glass – These glasses can be worn for distance viewing of television and other spectator activities.

  • Bioptic (Spectacle-mounted) Telescopes – A telescope can be mounted in a pair of glasses. This gives a hands-free option for distance view that can be used for driving.

Non-optical Devices

There are large print or talking versions of most everyday items including calendars, watches, remote controls, and calculators.

The Western New York Center for the Visually Impaired has access to many low vision devices. Our devices range from items that will help you to maintain your independence at home, work, or performing your day to day activities outside of the home. We have devices that will benefit you with your home and meal management responsibilities, low vision health aids, and devices that will allow you to maintain your independence. These devices can help you to retain a safe environment due to vision loss and in many cases provide the ability to maintain a healthy, active, and independent lifestyle. .  Below are just a few of the items which we supply.
